An abdominal ultrasound uses sonar sound waves to produce a picture of your abdominal cavity. The ultrasound is typically used to detect any ailments in the major organs, including your gallbladder, kidneys, liver, pancreas, and spleen.

An ultrasound is a safe and painless procedure that produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. Unlike a complete abdominal ultrasound that produces a picture of the organs and other structures in the upper abdomen (liver, gall bladder, common bile duct, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, upper abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava) a limited abdominal wall ultrasound focuses solely on images of the abdomen wall.

An abdominal wall ultrasound gives a clear picture of soft tissue in the abdominal wall that does not show up well on x-ray images and is often required for patients with chronic abdominal pain or used to clarify the location of an abdominal mass.

Please contact our office for specific instructions on how to prepare for this exam.

A pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the organs and structures within the pelvis. Depending on the view needed, pelvic ultrasounds can be performed either transabdominal and/or transvaginal.

It is recommended to drink 4 to 6 glasses of water in preparation for the exam, to expand the bladder for optimal visualization of the pelvic structures.

A renal ultrasound is a safe and noninvasive exam that uses sound waves to create images of the kidneys and related structures, like ureters and the bladder. These ultrasounds are usually ordered when there is a concern of kidney or bladder problems.

The kidneys are examined to determine their size, shape and exact position in the abdomen. Renal ultrasounds can also detect signs of injury to the kidneys, complications of a urinary tract infection, and the presence of blockages, kidney stones, cysts or tumors.

A thyroid ultrasound creates images of the size and shape of the thyroid gland, but it is not used to tell how well the thyroid gland is working. The ultrasound is primarily used to detect any abnormal growth in the thyroid gland, including cysts and thyroid nodules.

The bone densitometry test is like an x-ray that quickly and accurately measures the density of bone. It is used primarily to detect osteopenia or osteoporosis, which is a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and are more likely to break. A bone density test enhances the accuracy of calculating your risk of breaking bones.

During a Pelvic MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), magnets and radio waves are used to capture images of the area between the hip bones to inspect the bladder, reproductive organs, lymph nodes, and pelvic bones. The imaging test is performed to examine potential problems found in other imaging tests such as x-rays; diagnose unexplained hip pain; investigate the spread of certain cancers; or better understand the conditions causing your symptoms.
